Camp and Save Big $$$

I am being lulled to sleep, yet again, by the ever crashing waves of the ocean. Barefoot I stood out under the brightness of a full moon as I brushed my teeth prepared to head into my cozy tent. Each morning rays of sun reflected off our yellow rain guard before any buzzing alarm clock would go off. I know  I was awakened by the sun for twenty seven days straight because during that time we were picking cherries on the South Island of New Zealand. If it were to have rained we would not have been able to pick cherries so we kept track of how many days in a row we had worked. Each day we camped on a tiny beach named Rarangi and by doing so were able to save a ton of money. Other backpackers were paying about $300 per week to live in a dorm and Chris and I spent less than that to live on the beach for a month.

This past week I wrote a guest post for a great site called How to Travel for Free (or pretty damm near it!). Here I gave a basic introduction on what you need to know to get camping in a safe and fun manner. One of the reasons Chris and I can travel for such extended periods of time is because we keep our lodging cost as low as possible. Camping is both a great way to lower both travel cost and our impact around the globe. Like most matters of life, sometimes camping is the best thing in the world, sometimes it is the hardest thing in the world, but no matter what we end up it is always a unique experience and addition to our memory bank.

If you have yet to explore the wonders of camping, right now is a great time of year to look for deals and get you or someone else a gift. Find a good ‘first time’ camping location, (like a Vermont State Park!) and get yourself out there. There’s a lot of things to spend your hard earned money on and your bed doesn’t have to be one of the most expensive travel related cost. Get yourself out there camping today!

Car camping in a National Park out west.
After spending a couple of nights on the Kepler Track in New Zealand, we came off the trail to a double rainbow at our car.
Our tent in a valley of the Green Stone Caples trek in New Zealand.
A few moments after taking the photo above, the sun came streaming through the clouds and this was our evening sunset as we ate dinner in a valley we had all to ourselves.

  • Your posts are always informative and helpful! I always appreciate the links. What better way for travel experience… hooray for camping!!!

  • Great post! Lots in info about camping…. It does always seem that the best stories come from camping experiences…. Like our favorite in Maniwaki!

    • Exactly! We will never forget that trip to Maniwaki…was it ever a time of extremes, trips to the hospital, chasing dogs, but in the end one of my favorite family memories.
