Chasing the Sun in Argentina

Holy smokies…another week come and gone. The countdown is on and soon we will be flying back to the United States. What a trip it’s been so far!

This past week saw us in Buenos Aires where I took some time to write an article about one of my all time favorite countries: Australia. The piece won’t come out till later this week and I had great plans of taking a rainy Sunday afternoon to finish the rest of the post I wanted to publish this week. But chaos over took the city of Buenos Aires as it poured down rain. A word to any of you out there studying city planning, pay attention in class! As I was walking through ankle to shin deep water, I believe whomever planned that city’s drainage system did not pay attention in class.

The day just went being stuck in subways, crazy streets and endless rain and I did not finalize the next piece (it’s about an abandoned town that is now a UNESCO world heritage site–any guesses as to where it could be?) We are now at Iguazu Falls (!) and it is sunny out. One never knows how long the sun will last here so we are out almost all the moments of the day right now.

Us at Iguazu Falls! We made it!
But keep your eyes peeled like this big eyed butterfly here.
There are some more post to come!
In the meantime, let us know if you have ever heard of an abandoned town (in one of the three countries we have traveled to in South America) that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Hint: It used to be a mining town.

  • WOW! Iguazu Falls, you’re heading into jungle territory now! Can’t wait to see what happens next.

    • Iguazu has been amazing! Definitely a place to visit and the park (at least on the Argentina side) is well set up and managed. Loving it in the jungle.

Ooh, a contest with a hint! I know this one. It’s Sewell, the copper mining town. No wait, it’s Santa Laura! Nope nope nope, that can’t be it, it’s Humberstone, the saltpeter works! Hmmm, maybe not. Okay, my final guess is Iquique. Yeah, but that town’s not abandoned. Oh, I give up, what is it? Did I win anything?

    • Well, looks like you have been doing some research! Way to go. Your guess of Humberstone is correct! Thanks for playing. Once we get back to the States, you have won some Vagabond Way stickers! Send us an email with your contact info and we will mail you the stickers. πŸ™‚

  • Oh my goodness, these pictures are so beautiful! I especially LOVED the gorgeous picture of my handsome son and beautiful daughter-in-law, WOW you two are stunning and look so joyful!:)

    • It’s hard not to be joyful at Iguazu, it truly is amazing! And especially to get such a wonderful sunny day like we had.

  • Let the games begin!!! Is it Machu Picchu? I am no winner so I am not expecting anything, LOL!

    • Good guess! Machu Picchu was abandoned, but it is Humberstone. Email us your contact info and we will send you some Vagabond Way stickers! Thanks for guessing! πŸ™‚

  • It is pretty easy to guess where UNESCO is. You have been there for months and are almost leaving. I think by now we have all caught on that you are in South America. Game over. Haha. 😁

    • Well, yes, UNESCO sites are all over the world and we have visited a handful of great sites, like Humberstone. A great reason to travel to South America. Send us your contact info and we will send you some Vagabond Way stickers! Thanks for guessing. πŸ™‚

  • That waterfall is amazing!! So gorgeous. Darn I thought I would win it with the answer for the abandoned city being Detroit. Robocop would have voted for my answer….

    • Haha! Good guess! Jon Stewart had a line that, the average response time for a police call in Detroit is over 20 minutes, while Dominoes Pizza guarnteed their pizza in 15 min or less.
You have some Vagabond Way stickers coming your way!

    • Woo woo! I’ll stick them on some hobos, and some vagabonds! Can’t wait. πŸ™‚
