Financial Case Studies with Nora Dunn

Oh boy…something fun and different this week. Nora Dunn of The Professional Hobo started a new series on her site, Financial Case Studies. We’ve seen Nora here on Vagabond Way back when Chris and I participated in her ‘Week in the Life Series.’ If you missed it, click here and read about one of the best weeks of our life in Australia where we completed a life long dream to swim with whale sharks.

But this week is talking about $money$. That one topic that everyone always wants to ask bloggers and travelers about. In the world of blogging and online entrepreneurship there are many different ways and amounts of money people make. This is really no different than any profession a person can choose to go into.

Like all of life, there are endless ways to carve out a living. Nora’s series provides an inside look to different ways all types of people (singles, couples, families) have found and chosen to make a living working and traveling. Because we keep detailed financial records, Nora chose us as the couple to be featured in the book she wrote, Working on the Road. That book is jammed packed with all sorts of tips and resources to help get folks set up for success to find ways to earn a living while traveling. The book breaks down an individual, couple (yours truly!) and a family’s cost of living on the road for a two year span.

So for now, here is our take on how we have been able to carve out a niche for ourselves to work and travel in a financially sustainable way. I LOVE this series on Nora’s site. Whenever I see a new case pop up I immediately click on it because I am so curious to see how other people live. Thanks for looking and I hope you enjoy:

Also, house keeping note, if anyone has had trouble commenting on the blog, please let me know. I have heard a few folks had an issue and trying to figure out if it may have been spotty internet or another problem. Thanks so much! πŸ™‚

  • It really is amazing what you can do with such a relatively small budget. Just goes to show that you don’t need to be making a substantial amount of money to see the world and travel; you just need to be smart about it.

Thanks Laura. Indeed, a huge piece to our travel life style is picking and choosing which things we spend our money on. It’s not an easy choice every time, but it has gotten easier for us. For instance, when the decision to either go on a full day rhino tour or bungee jumping was presented to us, there was no debate. We knew right away we’d go looking for rhinos – and it was a highlight of our trip! πŸ™‚

Hi Tiffany I really enjoyed your interview I really think your advice should be taken by every one. What I mean by that is everyone should have six months of savings in reserve. You both have the two things every parent wants for their children. Be healthy and happy. Keep on keeping on and Love reading Your posts.
    Love, Alan

      Hey Allen,

Thanks so much for the comment! I think are you SO right and thanks for saying so. Yes, it is a standard rule of living that everyone should do whatever it takes to ensure they have six months worth of savings. We never know what life will throw our way and at least by abiding by this rule, we can eliminate some of the stresses that will inevitably pop up. We are so thankful for all the opportunities we are able to experience and hope that more and more folks realize although they cannot control everything that happens to them in their lives, they can still control their attitudes and make sacrifices to get some of the things they want and enjoy. Thanks so much for the kind words. πŸ™‚

  • I am delighted to learn your hard work and attention to detail has paid off! Pun is intended LOL Keep up the good work
