Flower Buying Time in Vermont, USA

Every spring when I see the brown grass emerging under the snow, I think of one thing, flowers! The brown grass will only turn into green grass which means soon it will be time to put flowers in the ground!

When I first started learning about flowers, I didn’t even know the difference between perennials and annuals. I remember being in a room of people and those terms were being thrown around as casually as bread and butter. I sat there and tried to look confident amoungst my peers, only to slip out the door and google the difference the first chance I got. Google told me perennials are the type of flowers that will keep coming up again over and over every spring. Annuals are the flowers that will only survive one season. There is so much I could say about which type of flowers one can put together, matching different bloom times throughout spring, summer and fall or flower combinations. One could spend a life time getting degrees, reading books and becoming a flower expert.

I am not a flower expert, but Donna is, so now we go together every year when it’s time to buy flowers!

Once a year Donna and I get to go to our version of a kids candy store:

annual green house

The Cabot Greenhouse!!!

We had planned this outing and scheduled it onto the calendar weeks prior. I think you can see we were pretty excited.

vicky in greenhouse

Locally owned by Vicki and Gary, the Cabot Greenhouse has been a family run business since 1989.

geraniums

If you buy a plant from the Cabot Greenhouse, you know your plants have been personally cared for, looked after, moved around for the best sun and lovingly watered.

feather tatto

They also have a lady working for them with the one of the coolest tattoos ever. I loved her tattoo so much I asked if it was ok to take some photos of it. She kindly let me move her arm all around trying out different lighting for the shot.

mossy basket

I loved all the work stations throughout the greenhouses. These are the places where beautiful creations come to life.

favorite purple flower

And our newest favorite flower this season – this Petunia!

cash register

I took this photo of their check out area and kept just staring at it for what felt like forever trying to figure out why I like it so much. Maybe it’s because there is no conveyor belt like there would be if you bought flowers from Wal-Mart. Or the red pen in the foreground? I still don’t know exactly. I just know, to me, this what I want it to feel like when I check out to buy flowers.

perrenials

Area after area just kept going with plants.

How cool to have this as your back yard!

The Cabot Greenhouse and Nursery is one of several awesome small businesses in this area to support.

proven winners

So get yourself to your local green house this spring. They are sure to have some proven winners for you. If you are unsure about what to plant, how to plant or where to plant, ask your local greenhouse. Running a greenhouse is tremendous labor of love. If they weren’t passionate about it, they wouldn’t be doing it. Ask them questions, support a local business, plant some flowers, help the bees and watch the goodness grow around you. You might just get to know your neighbors a little bit better in the process.

  • Springtime greenhouses have to be one of the BEST places to visit! Everything is so fresh and inviting. I’m sure you and your charming assistant made marvelous choices and Cabot’s looks like the perfect place to do that.

Oh it was wonderful. We love our flower choices. But two days ago there was a bad frost warning, so all the flowers have been safely sitting in Donna’s sunny porch. Now, they will go in the ground this week!!! Very exciting.

Gorgeous, gorgeous pictures! I am so envious, we haven’t any greenhouse of that caliber around here. Enjoy gardening.

Thank you!!! We are so lucky here. Although, I’m sure there is a small business somewhere close to you. 🙂 Hope you get to plant some beautiful flowers yourself! 🙂

  • About that petunia, the one that looks like you are “star gazing” on a dark night and the stars are so numerous it is easy for one to become spell bound. That is what those petunia petals look like and I must have it!!!!! What is it called? I hope it is still blooming
    when we visit. (hint hint)

I think it is called the deep dark petunia. We saw that flower and immediately were like, we have to get this one! Luckily, because there has been so much flower planning done over the years, there is almost always flowers in bloom the entire summer season!!! 🙂

  • Oh what beautiful flowers! They sure do just make everything look so much nicer and prettier and lovelier and beautifuler and I think you get my point! =)
