Outdoor Photographer Magazine – Fall in Vermont

I was sitting at my desk looking out the window as a man dressed in rain proof, shiny black pants and matching jacket walked into the lodge. In a thick European accent (my guess German)  he asks if he can pay his day use fee.

“Where are you from?” I asked him.
“Germany.” (My guess was correct.)
“Has America been treating you well?”
“Oh yes, I love it. I’m a professional photographer and I am here for the fall colours.”
I gave him his pass and he briskly walked off into the woods carrying bags of photography gear that I imagined costing more than my last two cars combined.
As a long term traveler I am not opposed to living in my home country and finding new experiences. We are fortunate to live at the end of a dirt road surrounded by 27,000 acres of forest. We’ve seen moose, bear, turkeys, various birds, loons, beaver, fish, countless insects and amphibians, turtles and our warren, or herd, of resident bunnies that live around the lodge. I must say, if we could have easily attained visas to keep living in Australia, we would have lingered there for years, but there are so many amazing places all over the world to inhabit and currently we are living in one.
The lodge we manage was featured in Outdoor Photographer in the top ten Pro-Fall Hot Spots for color. In last week’s post, I mentioned taking advantage of opportunities that present themselves and living at Seyon Lodge is a unique opportunity and we are thankful to be here. Since our listing in Outdoor Photographer, most mornings upon waking up the parking lot is full and there is a line of photographers down at the water with tripods and big lenses.

Soon we’ll be heading off to South America for the winter and the roles will be reversed with locals asking us if their country is treating us well as we visit some of their top 10 spots. In the meantime, we’ll keep raking the walk way, cooking dinners and looking after our visitors from near and far.

Have a look if you’d like at some of these amazing places across the country (including us!) for viewing fall colors.
