Photo Roulette Round #104

Thanks everyone for all your positive encouragement!

I am pleased to announce our photo entry of “Lady Leopard” was the WINNER for an online blogging contest of Travel Photo Roulette!!!

Finding this leopard, so quietly resting was one of the highlights of our African safari experience. To just be eye to eye was such an enchanting experience I will not soon forget. Thank you Monica and Jon of We Travel Together for choosing our shot as the winning entry.

Now it’s our turn to host Photo Roulette Round #104! We chose the theme: FESTIVAL

We want to see your favorite, best festival photos! We have one fellow traveler who plans all his around the world routes by following either his favorite festival or choosing new festivals to attend.

Here are a couple examples of some of our favorite festival photos:

tolka festival in vanuatu

These shots are from the Tolka Festival in Vanuatu – which if you ever get the chance to attend it was outstanding. This festival happens only once every four years and was such an interesting look into the culture of Vanuatu.

Below are the rules for participating in the photo roulette. Look forward to seeing your festival shots!

Travel Photo Roulette Contest Overview

The contest rotates through travel/photography blogs, so the winner of the previous round of Travel Photo Roulette hosts the subsequent round on their own blog. The new host then chooses the next theme (a generic keyword or phrase) and bloggers submit their interpretations of the theme over the course of the week of the contest.

At the end of the week, the hosting blogger chooses their favorite photo from the submissions and displays it as the week’s winning entry. They then include direction to the new host for the next round. Readers can attempt to sway the author into picking a certain photo via comments, but the author can ignore comments as they see fit. The game is repeated with the winner hosting the following week’s game and choosing a phrase for new photo submissions.

Travel Photo Roulette Rules & Guidelines

  • One submission per blog, so sites that have 2+ authors only get one entry.
  • Post processing is permitted in this round.
  • Abstract submissions welcomed as long as it fits within the interpretation of the chosen phrase. Remember, the hosting blogger chooses the winner, so if they cannot understand the submission, you might not win!
  • Please try and keep your images medium-sized and web-optimized.
  • If you win, keep these in mind when choosing a new theme: Keep phrases general so that all bloggers can participate. Specific items like “Eiffel Tower” should be avoided but rather made open-ended like “monuments.” For variety, it is okay to say focused things such as “monuments at night” which most of us have pictures of. Phrases can be generic ‘signs’, or abstract ‘religion’
  • Abstract thoughts are appreciated, but keep it within the realm that all readers will understand. No “Kafka-esque,” or “Overlooking Creation.” Use something that is able to be interpreted by all.
  • After 1 year, phrases can be reused, however new photos must be submitted.
  • No obscene pictures or phrases allowed. Suggestive phrases and photography can be accepted, but please keep it within reason.
  • Keep the ideas and photos fresh!
  • Pictures from your entire portfolio are fair to submit. You do not have to take the photo within the week of the contest period to submit it.
  • Most importantly, all photographs must be your own.
  • One last rule, since this is a competition for travel and photography bloggers, you must have a travel/photography blog to enter. Sorry!

“My Festival photo is from Catalonia, Spain on All Saints Day, (Nov. 1st, 2014), when the Castellers of Vilafranca form human towers. Here they are getting ready with their Faixa, (belts), which they wrap around and around their waists. Faixa serve as footholds for climbers, as they form higher and higher human towers. On this day 3 different regional clubs performed in the major town square to a crowd of thousands.

Entry #2: Carole from Travels with Carole

The Feast of San Gennaro is held along Mulberry Street in Little Italy in NYC on the last two weeks of September. It celebrates the patron saint of Naples and is all about food–sausage sandwiches, cannoli, even fried Oreos.”

Entry #3: Lance from Travel Addicts

“We love a good festival or holiday. For us, our absolutely favorite has been the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt – or Christmas market. This is part beauty pageant (beautiful teenage girls compete to win the title of Christkind – or Christ child) and part shopping extravaganza (food and gifts). Unlike other Christmas markets or events, this one is actually frequented by locals and its not the made-for-tourists experience of other Christmas markets. We’ve been for several years and just love it!”

“Once a year, usually on the third Sunday of September, the Warachikuy festival is held in the Inca ruins of Saqsaywaman outside of Cusco. It is a colourful celebration of an ancient Inca initiation rituals for young males who have to perform a series of athletic feats to test their courage, speed, endurance and skills. Hundreds of amateur actors participate with great enthusiasm. The spectator crowd consists of more locals than tourists.”

“I was blown away by the street parties in Rio de Jaeiro as Carnival swung into high gear. This is a picture of a couple we passed while walking through town. I asked, ‘Ma photo, por favor?’and they swung into a pose! It happened over and over. Love Brazil and Braziians!”

“After debating and agreeing to a declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote he was convinced that on July 2nd, Americans would gather to commemorate this momentous event with a “great anniversary Festival”. He presciently wrote, “It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” He got the date wrong, but not the way we celebrate. The Fourth of July (the day the Declaration of Independence was actually signed) has indeed become an annual American festival and “illuminations” are part of the celebration in every city and town, large and small. Although my husband and I are Philadelphians, for the last 8 years, we have enjoyed the Atlantic City Fourth of July fireworks from our deck in the next beach town to the north, Brigantine, New Jersey. We took this photo of a firework burst during the 2013 celebration.”

  • Hi Tiffany,

Your leopard photo is enchanting! Love those eyes! Congratulations on your Photo Roulette win.

      Hi Josie,

Thanks so much for your entry! Spain seems to have so many interesting festivals! I should like to live there for a year just to have a small taste of them. Creating human towers seems like an intriguing festival to have been at. Thank you so much again for your entry!

      Best, Tiff

  • Gorgeous photos as always Tiff. Lady Leopard has some beautiful eyes. I also love the photo below it. The colors are so vibrant and there is such energy. It is one of those photos I would stare at for hours and ask if it is a painting or a photo. Love it.

Thank you! Lady Leopard is mesmerizing. Being there in person, with just us, was so surreal. Glad you enjoy as well.

  • The Feast of San Gennaro is held along Mulberry Street in Little Italy in NYC on the last two weeks of September. It celebrates the patron saint of Naples and is all about food–sausage sandwiches, cannoli, even fried Oreos.

Carole, any festival with food is great! Deep fried oreos a two week long festival with food!? Oh boy. I always remember trying deep fried cheese cake out in California. Thank you for sharing and entering the competition! Cheers.

I love Christmas festivals! This looks like an awesome festival. Christmas festivals are some of my favorite to attend, I will have to add this one to the list. Thank you for sharing your photo and entering the competition – stunning photo.

  • That’s an amazing photo which gave you the deserved win! (Somehow I missed that round.)
Our contribution this time round is from Cusco in Peru. My description, as posted on Trover.com:

Glad you liked the leopard photo. We have also been to Saqsaywaman. That must have been so neat to be there with the Warachikuy festival. Looks awesome – I can only imagine what it would have looked like in person. Thank you much for sharing your photo and entering the competition.
