Ushuaia, Argentina – At the End of the World

Last week there was some excitement. We saw a bunch of penguins at the End of the World, Ushuaia, Argentina and I placed in the top 3 for the We Said Go Travel Writing Contest! Keeping the excitement rolling, let’s see what the most southernly city in the world looked like.

Welcome to the End of the World, Ushaiua, Argentina.

422 valley view left

There’s the town of Ushuaia – with Antarctica in the distance! ๐Ÿ˜‰

406 chris glacier

We hiked up to Glaciar Martial.

412 glacier sign

No going on the glacier without proper training and equipment.

417 valley view

Looking at this picture, it looks like this hike would have taken all day. It wasn’t that hard and seems like we spent a leisurely half day hiking to get this view.

431 green

I don’t know the name of this plant, but I think it looks awesome.

432 green 2

It was just beautiful.

441 big green

I’m sorry I don’t know the name.

442 green 3

I could have put just one picture in –

444 green 4

– but I liked them all so much.

440 other green

I don’t know the name of this plant either, but it sure looked hardy.

452 bike

What I loved most about this tandem bike set up was the stick. They attached that stick somewhere on their bike just to prop it up.

453 clock tower

Look at the glass in the tower of that window.

456 crab shack

We didn’t go, but this restaurant was supposed to have amazing crab.

454 mural

Expressive mural depicting the first inhabitants to the area.

501 museum front

We went to the Thematic Gallery which had life like statues and we could step into the scenes and role play.

That’s me next to what the very first inhabitants of the area used to dress like for special ceremonies.

Tiff canoeing.

DSC_4802 steering

I take steering a ship very seriously.

DSC_4827 tiff in jail

Me being very sad to be locked up like a prisoner.

DSC_4830 t w shal

Tiff hanging out with Ernest Shackelton. How cool was that!?

DSC_4843 t in rainjacket

And finally, I was working down at the docks in the classic yellow jacket next to a king penguin.

491 chris steering

Chris also takes steering a ship very seriously. Although he is not looking forward at the rocks he was about to hit!

496 chris in jacket

He also posed for way less pictures.

477 boats

Ushuaia was a neat place to walk around and see all the ships leaving for Antarctica.

DSC_4848 boat 2

For whatever reason birds flocked to this half sunken ship.

DSC_4856 boat

It made for quite an attraction to simply stand and watch the hundreds of birds fussing about this old ship.

500 beaver

ย We saw a beaver walking around town. Beavers are an invasive species to the area and are causing a lot of havic to the natural ecosystems. We hitched a ride with a Chilean biologist who was working in the national park trying to determine the best course of actions to deal with all the beavers. None the less, it was pretty funny to see this beaver walking around the streets.

476 chris small bench

We also sat on the tiniest bench ever.

475 tiff small bench

Although I don’t know if I look as small as Chris.

Ushuaia would be an interesting place to spend a year and see all the seasons. We enjoyed our time hanging out at the End of the World and I can’t wait till we can go back and be one of the people getting on the boats to go to Antarctica!

If you go:

We stayed at Camping La Pista del Andino and it was great. Lodging is expensive in Argentina and if you are set up to camp, you will save a lot. We usually walked into town from the campground (all down hill!) and as it started to get dark, took a taxi (all up hill!) back to the campground. Even paying for the taxi, it was way cheaper to stay at the campground than any of the hostels in town.

Camping for 2 ppl ~$120 ARS – $15 USD

Taxi ย ~ $32 ARS each time – $3.75 USD

Thematic Museum $160 ARS – $19 USD

  • Aside the dubious honor of being the end of the world Ushuaia looks to be a more than interesting place! The Thematic Gallery must have been all sorts of fun! Why were you and Chris always wearing headphones?

The museum had headphones in a handful of languages so we had a self guided walking tour of the museum. The Thematic Gallery was really good. The replications were spot on.

  • Fab images Tiffany! Looks quite brisk down there, as to be expected.

Tweeting soon. Thanks so much for sharing.

Hi Ryan, Thanks so much. Ushuaia was awesome and it was brisk down there. I remember riding in on a bus from someplace warm and watching the snow line getting lower and lower down the mountain sides as we got closer to Ushuaia. We bought one more sleeping bag and from then on had cozy nights and an awesome time.

Great post Tiff, as usual the photography is wonderful. Six pictures was just fine for that plant, it was an interesting plant.

Thanks, well I went back and forth, back on forth on those plant pics, and as I see we both agree, it was just so neat I sure didn’t mind looking at it a couple of times. There was so awesome plant life down there. Glad you enjoyed. Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

I agree with Rick, gorgeous photos and I love Tiffs hat! It was interesting to read that beavers are a menace in other parts of the world, can we be sure that Chris isn’t inside that beaver costume? This was another amazing trek for vagabond way viewers!:) Thanks Tiff and Chris!

Thanks Christine. Beavers are a menace there because they are introduced so they are altering things differently than a place they are endemic to. I must say tho, it was one of the best beaver costumes I have ever seen and I secretly wished I could have been that person for a while to shake that beaver tail around town! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Once again an exceptional piece. As someone who will never have the opportunity to travel as do you and Chris I am living the life through your reports. This is a great opportunity for me and I certainly do appreciate the top notch quality of your travel reports. Thanks again for the great work that both of you do.
    Stay Safe!

Thanks Brian. We have a lot of fun taking all these photos. So glad you are able to journey with us to these places – that is about the best compliment a photographic – story teller – writer could hope for! On wards for both us for the adventuring.

Hi, About those flowers, until you find out what they really are called I think they look
like “Polish Shamrocks” they make me smile and think of family.
Nice going. I do love your posts

Oh wow, I will have to look up Polish shamrocks and see what I can find. I cannot wait to go to Poland – there is so much history there. Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoy the posts! ๐Ÿ™‚

Nice pictures Tiff. I wish Chris was just as much as a poser tooo. Bit then again you would probably have way too many photos to chose from.It must have been so neat to look off the coast of Agtentina and know that you are not looking at a different country but a whole other continent. I had mo idea Anartica was so close. Great work and nice job on snagging third place.

Hmm….oh dear I think I may have led dear readers astray. The winking smiley face meant I was being sarcastic. Yes, Antarctica is off yonder from Ushuaia, but it’s waaaaaaaaaay off yonder.
I will simply take this to mean that everyone has wonderful imaginations. Sorry for any confusion – don’t worry, some day we will get to Antarctica and take lots of photos of the Drake Passage. ๐Ÿ™‚
