Saying Yes to My Computer

You ever reach a point where you just says yes to every prompt your computer gives you?

That was pretty much my last week. As you may have read in last weeks post, I am switching over this site to my own self hosted word press site with hostgator. I had done weeks of research to determine if this was
A.) the best plan for me
B.) book marked all these online tutorials
C.) made an emergency back up list of people I could contact if it went really bad

I haven’t even gotten to the point of using any of my previously book marked step by step tutorials because there was one other little thing I had to do first: install Word Press.

I read all the headlines of the ‘famous 5 minute installation’ and didn’t even think, and by that I mean read the directions, to find out what programs and capability things I needed to either have or install. Any of you computer savvy folks may scoff at this, but it took me a few days (amongst doing other things) to figure out if I had even installed word press correctly. So there I sat watching videos on not how to transfer my blog, but how to figure out how to unzip a file. And then realizing I didn’t have the right program to paste plain text code into because opening with Windows Word can damage documents, so there again I am watching videos on how to use File Zilla. It seemed all I kept doing was researching, downloading programs and saying yes to every prompt box that popped up. Let me tell you, wondering if you have even properly installed a program that is used by millions and supposed to be super easy to install, is not a boost of confidence.

But, the hours went on and eventually got the Word Press screen to come up. I am pretty sure many other people have not encountered the knowledge gap I have, but I have also read the help forums. I know I am also not the only one who has celebrated (finally) installing word press correctly.

Chris looked over at me from where he is sitting on the bed, because I am doing all this on his computer, and says, “I thought you knew what you were doing, now watching you I realize you have no idea. Well, kinda I did, but, no not really. One can spend their whole life doing nothing because they don’t want to look like an idiot or say they don’t know something. Chris jumped in to help figure out all these directions. His efforts were mostly motivated by the desire to get his computer back (and partially to keep his wife happy), but none the less, they were essential and I was extremely grateful.

That’s where I’ve been living very late and very early. My net book on my lap constantly researching you tube tutorials.
Ah, but look at that word press page finally there!
When we stop to think about how far computers have come, it is remarkable.
I am remember playing Oregon Trail on that classic green screen. I did love inserting that floppy disk to play that game.

So this is kinda like a warning message #2, the site is moving, but hopefully nothing any of you will notice other than a slightly different layout. I’m still not out of the woods yet in terms of hoping I don’t screw it up.

Some people look at our life style and comment how nervous they’d be going off into another country, not knowing the language or sleeping in the woods if there are bears about. I look at people who do this kinda computer stuff and think, how can you not get nervous that you don’t mistype a symbol or put a space in the wrong space? It’s all about what we’re comfortable with. What we know. And what I know, is I want to keep pushing myself to do what makes me uncomfortable.

I want the magic.
